North Star {Cabled Bear Hooded Cowl Knit}

This is the twenty-fifth post in my North Star November series….a soul centered discussion about depression.  Each day this month, I’ll be sharing a piece of my soul’s journey, along with a free pattern to thank you for taking part in such an important conversation!  Catch up by reading Day 24.   Skip forward to Day 26.

Tricky Fox

Our Minds are Tricky

The Default Mode Network of your brain has lots of little tricks to try to get your attention back.

It’ll tell you all sorts of lies.  We have to get practiced at recognizing the lie and resisting the pull towards unconscious thought in order to kick those repetitive thought patterns.

The ides is to recognize and bring awareness to thoughts that you’ve starting focusing on.  Once you’re aware of them, they’re no longer an unconscious choice.  At this point, you can replace them with the loving meditative mantra you created a couple days ago.

However, this is where it can get tricky.

As soon as you consciously make the choice to let go of a repetitive thought pattern, your mind is going to start SCREAMING!

Remember, our minds (which are NOT us) are created to love certainty and rigidity.  Our mind thinks letting go of repetitive thoughts is an unsafe thing to do.  After all, if you keep thinking the same way you have in the past, you’ll get the same results.  Our minds love knowing exactly what to expect.

So…the moment you try to stop thinking a certain thought or to simply let thoughts come and go, you might hear your mind saying something like this (these are the lies my mind likes to use):

  • “Wait!  That was an important thought.  I shouldn’t forget about it.”

OR

  • “I’m sure if I think about this just a little more, I’ll be able to come up with some sort of solution.”

I’m here to tell you, though, that believing our minds’ lies often makes things worse.

Stay Present and Smell the Coffee

I have gone back and continued to think those unconscious thoughts many times…and it has never paid off.

However, when I recognize that this is my mind’s tricky way of taking back control, I am easier able to let those thoughts go.

Suddenly I’m grounded back into the present.  In the present, I can look around, use my senses, and see that there’s nothing unsafe here.  Just another lovely day to be had if I can stay present to the moment.

Comment and tell me…

What lies does your mind tell you when trying to let sticky thoughts go?

  1. My mind tells me everything electronic is more urgent than what is happening In Real life right in front of me.

    Thanks for the adorable pattern.

  2. What an adorable and versatile pattern. I’lol make it with ears for my grandchildren and with capelet for me. Knitting reduces my stress levels so fun patterns are great.

  3. Melody, thank you so much for all of these wonderful patterns.
    Be Blessed!

  4. I’m not good enough and can’t do what I want to. Sadly when I think of it, it’s not even my voice, it’s the voices of my family growing up and even now if I allow them telling me this but I know deep down they are wrong and have to purposely tell myself how wrong they are.

  5. It’ll be okay, keep doing the certain job, but really it never gets better and so I finally chose to not do that certain job and now work for a lower pay job and I’m much happier and not as stressed!
