How to Earn a Free Hat

It’s been one of those days….you know the kind.  The kind where I simply can’t work up the motivation to do anything other than surf the internet (which has actually led to some excellent finds today!) or take a nap.  It’s a wonder I’m ever able to get anything done knowing that my work is based totally upon self-motivation and I’m aware that days like this actually do exist.

Anyways, because sometimes life calls for simplicity or because today just happens to be one of those “less is more” type of days, I’ve decided to share this funny little crafting tidbit with you…..I just found it over on Reddit, and it made me laugh.  I think we’ve all felt this way from time to time.

It’s not that I don’t love crafting for other people, but sometimes the endless requests for things get a little overwhelming.  It’s times like these that I wish I had the courage to reply like this:

I usually tell people, I only do free knitting for people

1.  I’m sleeping with

2.  who cook for me

3.  clean my house

4.  or all of the above

  8. Oh my! Thank you so much–perfect timing for laughs needed lol!!

  9. Enjoyed it very much, needed it as well.

  10. OMG! Melody that was great. I was in reahab last Feb. after surgery, naturally I had my crocheting with me. Well one of the aides saw what I was making & it was like a telephone line. Everyone including Doctors stopped in to see what I was doing. One day after therapy I was asked if I could hold a knitting class for the others by staff. Now let me tell you all the residents were over 80 years old & I am only 53. Who would be teaching whom??!! LOL!

  11. I had a friend ask me to make a hat for her.. Just the price of the yarn alone was 60.00.. she could not believe me when I told her. the price so she didn’t want it…. Now I tell people I just crochet for family….Love your blog.

  12. Loved it! Needed a good laugh. People have no idea what it costs to make things and they are surprised when you tell them a price.

  13. Thank you for sharing this little snip it. It brought a laugh to me. My four legged kids couldn’t understand why I was laughing.

  14. Really a good one. So many people want you to do something for nothing. Not considering cost of yarn or time it takes to make an item. They have no clue.
I love your blog. Praying for you, baby and family!

  15. Some friends and I get together for lunch at a local place that doesn’t mind if we hang out after the lunch rush. A few people from one the card playing groups have been coming early to visit and two are planning to come and learn with us. My friends and I are a “bit” younger than our pupils will be. Should be interesting. But definitely have to post those rules.

  16. I will do free knitting or crocheting for friends that I KNOW will appreciate what I make or family. I enjoy making things for others, but the one thing that I can’t find alot of is patterns for little boys.. tons for girls and babies but not alot for toddler school age boys.. thats what I would like to see more of

  17. I am still only in my first year of crocheting…so I am not quite to this point yet…but I can see it coming in the future. LOL! Love it!

  18. Hehe, still honing my crochet skills but this will be a great reply for photography requests!

  19. I think this is just way to funny. Had me chuckling to myself because my wife says some of the lines to people on occasion. But i just can’t say no and really i don’t want to
. I find myself getting more into surfing as well hen i just can’t seem to finish a project. The sewing part makes me stop all the time..lol

  20. That’s funny! Odd, isn’t it? Seems like the only ones who expect you to do it for free is the ones who can most afford to buy the best!
Somehow when it’s handmade, the expect it for nothing!

  21. Thank you for a good morning laugh, I live in France and if I get my knitting or crochet out in public over here I get the” she”s not quite right in her head” look, which always makes me smile. I knit and crochet for others all the time.

  22. Yes I love going through looking at the comments people put on the blog, but like one of your other clients, making things people ask for, and after she spent all the money not to mention the time it took to make the hat and all. Then couldn’t at least offer to make payments to pay it off. But my thing is, I have a friend that really wanted me to make menion beanie hats for her, it started off being three then five, then she brought a Hugh bag of yarn to me wanting nine more of these hats in the next three to Four days, well I dropped everything else I was doing, even told her, even thought she brought the yarn there was still going to be a charge for my time because she wanted them soon and I dropped everything else to make them for her. Make the rest of the story short, she came picked up the hats, said thanks and i b I reminded her there was a charge for my time, now it’s going on three weeks and I haven’t seen or heard from her, so I’ve texted her phone to no avail. So my thing is how would you do for friends after that when you up front tell them u have a charge at least for your time, and they act like they were doing you a favor. Also for the Valentines I wish you could show some adult beanies with ear flaps, also made with hearts around the center of the hat going around the beanie. I’ve looked for something like that but no luck, also I’m self taught for crochet and knit so im not good at making my own patterns. Thank you. You are so blessed with your business, and all the friends you’ve made while doing so. Good Bless you.

    • Darn Vicki! That is just so sad. Her behavior is a great way to ruin a friendship. Sorry you’re dealing with that!

Thanks for the great ideas on the Valentine’s hat! I always forget to do Holiday stuff, lol. Perhaps I could sneak something in really quickly 😉

  23. I need to have this printed on a tote to carry my crochet in so when people approach I can just hold it up. Because like the Christine, everywhere I go I take my bag and even at the doctor’s office people approach me wanting me to make things. But I have found I can’t even wear my creations without total strangers stopping and asking so maybe I’ll need a t-shirt too. lol

  24. I ALWAYS laugh when I get your emails and ALWAYS rush to read them. My hubby is always telling me to take a break and just relax a day with no yarn, no hooks, no nothing. But if the truth be known and he actually knewn how many of those days I actually did take….LOL

  25. I love the quote, if only I could live that way… I find myself compelled to knit for free…I need rehabilitation 🙂

  26. I love reading you emails. You make me smile with your words and your creations x
