North Star {Cabled Bear Hooded Cowl}
This is the twenty-fourth post in my North Star November series….a soul centered discussion about depression. Each day this month, I’ll be sharing a piece of my soul’s journey, along with a free pattern to thank you for taking part in such an important conversation! Catch up by reading Day 23. Jump forward to Day 25.
The mind is a very slippery fish.
Everytime you feel you’ve got a hold on the situation, it will do its best to squirm away, flop on the ground, and take back control.
I’d like to remind you, though, that YOU are not your mind.
Our minds are just one portion of the brain (some call it the Default Mode Network or DMN) that exists solely to keep us alive. It’s a very practical piece of our brain that thrives by connecting past experience with the current situation. It wants to keep us safe and to create certainty.
In the past, this “default mode” was extremely useful to humankind.
In a hunter-gatherer society, having the ability to think and plan ahead (rather than just react in the moment like many other animals) could have been the difference between life and death.
In our more modern society, the DMN isn’t quite as necessary for our survival. Sure, there are still times when using the mind is necessary as a means of getting ahead. However, it’s now safe to drop into a deeper sense of self and turn off that default mode on a regular basis.
This is what meditation has been shown to do.
The meditating brain quiets activity in the Default Mode Network and allows access to other areas of the brain.
When we quiet our default areas and allow ourselves to use a wider consciousness, or wider brain function, to live our daily lives, amazing things happen.
This is when creativity begins to peak. This is when “out of the box” answers to tough questions arise. This is giving our deeper, wiser selves the chance to be present.
The DMN is fiercely loud and eager to be heard.
Don’t be discouraged if you spend a lot of time simply listening to your mind ramble when you first begin meditation (mine was super busy just this morning!). Realizing that this area of our brains will always be “ON” if we let it, is the first step to quieting it down.
Bringing awareness and recognition to your mind and thought patterns is the first step in changing them.
So listen non-judgmentally and with loving kindness to whatever your brain has to say….sort of like you would to your 7 year old who never stops talking (I speak from experience here!!).
Comment and tell me…
Have you ever experienced a sense of deeper peace when your mind has been still?

Have you ever experienced a sense of deeper peace when your mind has been still?
Always – the Holy Spirit – our constant companion, is continually imparting Godly wisdom and when I focus on Him (which quiets the noise in my head) I experience the peace that comes from God. A continual prayer of mine is – “Lord, please cause me to hear You speaking to me today”.
Hope you have a wonderful – peaceful day! Hugs.
Awesome! Finding the peace in God (or whatever your spiritual belief is) is a wonderful practice <3
I think all of us crafters have a nagging voice telling us we aren’t getting enough done. I took a few minutes to pick up the house yesterday because a friend was coming over to give me money for some stuff she asked me to make. I was a bit miffed that she didn’t show. that was time I could have spent making something I need to ship out to arrive in time for christmas. I don’t like being late with stuff. with only a few weeks to go I’m feeling the crunch. I ordered myself some coloring books I later thought why did I do that I don’t have the time. then it says if you got off the computer you’d have the time. HA! so true. Ok back to checking email so I can get busy crocheting.
Right? It’s funny how it’s somehow hard to give things up in order to make time for self care. I’ve given up my evening TV time entirely so I can get up early enough to meditate. I always experience a bit of resistance about it, but ultimately I’m feeling so much better! Glad you ordered the coloring books, and I hope you’ll make time to enjoy them when they arrive <3
When my mind is feeling relaxed I do feel very much deep peace!
Definitely. For me part of being still is also being quiet and that is hard with all that is going on around me constantly. That is one reason I love earplugs.
My sister and sister in law meditate often. They talk to me about it and I’ve tried numerous times. My mind is so busy with, I have to do this I have to do that. It’s like I have 20 people all talking at the same time. How long does it take to quiet things down and start feeling some peace?
I found that learning to sit with all those voices more compassionately and recognize how quickly they come and go without getting grippy with them was the first step. It also makes me feel more self compassionate when I can do this. Shortly after things start to quiet. It took me probably a month of combining mindfulness with guided meditation before I started to experience more quiet. I find the guided meditations can help to quiet that down too as you have more of a focal point. I still experience a lot of chattiness when I meditate in total silence. Some people find focusing on music to be exceptionally helpful too.
Yes, I have found an inner peace during meditation. Lately though I haven’t been able to experience any. I can’t seem to shut my brain off. I give in and get up and write down what’s spinning through my head. It helps.
Writing things down is a great way to help release them. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Melody for your reply. ?
