Average Head Circumference:

Newborn: 13-14″

0-3 Months: 14-15”

3-6 Months: 14-17”

6-12 Months: 16-19”

1-3 Years: 18-20”

3-10 Years: 19-20.5”

Materials:

● Yarn: Approximately 50 yards (30 light brown and 20 dark brown) of bulky (5) weight yarn for smaller sizes and approx. 80 (50 light brown and 30 dark brown) yards for larger sizes.  (I used Loops and Threads – Charisma)

 ● Knitting Needles: Size 6.0 mm (US 10) Double Pointed Needles (or use the Magic Loop Method) and Straight Needles

 ● Yarn or Tapestry Needle

Gauge:

 7 sts and 11 rows = 2 inches (5 centimeters) in stockinette stitch   

 ***It is important to check your gauge!***

Abbreviations:

●M1 (Make 1):  On a knit row: Insert left needle, front to back, under the strand between st on left needle and st on right needle making a new loop on left needle. Knit this loop through the back.

●K2tog: Knit two stitches together

●P2tog: Purl two stitches together

●**: Repeat the section in between the two stars as specified

Acorn Hat Knitting Pattern

Newborn Pattern

Cast on 45 sts onto Double Pointed Needles (or use the Magic Loop Method) with light brown yarn

Join in the round and place stitch marker

Round 1: Purl

Starting with round 2, knit each round until your piece measures approx. 3 inches long from the cast on edge

Drop light brown yarn and pick up dark brown yarn

Round 1: *K4, M1* Repeat 9 more times, K5 (55 total sts)

Round 2: *K2, P1, K2* Repeat around

Round 3: *K1, P1, K1, P1, K1* Repeat around

Round 4: *P1, K3, P1* Repeat around

Round 5: *K1, P1, K1, P1, K1* Repeat around

Round 6: *K2, P1, K2* Repeat around

Rounds 7-10: Repeat Rounds 3-6

Round 11: *P2tog, K1, P2tog* Repeat around (33 total sts)

Round 12: *K2tog* Repeat 15 more times, K1 (17 total sts)

Round 13: *K2tog* Repeat 7 more times, K1 (9 total sts)

Round 14: *K2tog* Repeat 3 more times, K1 (5 total sts)

Continue to knit each round until the stem of your acorn is approx. 1 inch tall.

Do not bind off.  Cut approx. 7 inch tail.  Using yarn needle, remove all sts from DPNs or magic loop, as if to purl.   Pull tail through sts to cinch the top of hat.  Using yarn needle, pull tail through to the inside of the hat.  Tie a knot and weave in ends.

0-3 Month Pattern

Cast on 48 sts onto Double Pointed Needles (or use the Magic Loop Method) with light brown yarn

Join in the round and place stitch marker

Round 1: Purl

Starting with round 2, knit each round until your piece measure approx. 3.5 inches long from the cast on edge

Drop light brown yarn and pick up dark brown yarn

Round 1: *K4, M1* Repeat 9 more times, K8 (58 total sts)

Round 2: K1, P1, K1, *K2, P1, K2* Repeat around

Round 3: K3, *K1, P1, K1, P1, K1* Repeat around

Round 4: P1, K1, P1, *P1, K3, P1* Repeat around

Round 5: K3, *K1, P1, K1, P1, K1* Repeat around

Round 6: K1, P1, K1, *K2, P1, K2* Repeat around

Rounds 7-10: Repeat Rounds 3-6

Round 11: K2tog, K1, *P2tog, K1, P2tog* Repeat around (35 total sts)

Round 12: *K2tog* Repeat 16 more times, K1 (18 total sts)

Round 13: *K2tog* Repeat around (9 total sts)
