Here’s a topic I’ve been sitting with lately.

Intuition vs. Ambition

How do I know when I’m following life’s gentle, supportive energy (my intuition), and how do I know when I’m forcing things to go my way (following ambition)?

SO MANY of the guides I’ve spoken to, books I’ve read, and little bits of info. I’ve put together myself revolve around learning to go with the flow.

Apparently even the 12 step program speaks about flowing with the river in their quote, “don’t push the river.”

So…follow life’s natural flow and everything should be reasonably easy…..right??

If we look at the animals around us who don’t have the chatty “default mode network” (the thinking logical part) in their brain, we can see this concept in action.

River
Flow with the River

The gorgeous deer living in my backyard don’t get caught up in all the details. They wander until they find food, and they run when they’re scared. There’s probably more going on there than we can really see (because we’re humans – not deer) but these deer certainly don’t carry around to-do lists that are 3 pages long.

All the preparing and planning for the future that we tend to do may actually be more ambition based than intuition based.

One of the meditation guides I work with, was able to help me tap further into my intuition with this instruction:

If it’s easy, you’re following intuition.

If it’s hard or exhausting, you’re following ambition.

Interesting, right??

Of course, I had to counter with the argument that there are often so many chores to be done that I’m always just doing the things that have to get done rather than doing the things that feel right.

In our busy society, we’re often so bogged down by all the things we “should” be doing that we don’t give ourselves the chance to simply follow the next urge.

My guide had an interesting response to this, pointing out that when she’s following her intuition, all the chores and things she “should” be doing still get done. They just happen easily and without so much resistance.

I’ve been putting the theory into action myself for the last few months, and it certainly is a new way of being.

Though I haven’t worked here on the blog quite as much as normal, everything else that I “should” have been doing has naturally been done in an intuitive way. My house is probably cleaner than normal, many of the health care type things that I’ve been thinking I “should” do are naturally happening (I’m eating better, exercising more, and no longer drinking alcohol at all), and somehow all my family members are still getting to the places they need to be on time.

The spaciousness associated with letting things flow naturally rather than forcing them has felt expansive. I feel held and supported in knowing that the next right thing will come, and all the things will get done. It’s just a matter of trusting that everything will flow as it should.

Comment and tell me…

Are you generally following your intuition or your ambition? Do you feel a difference when you simply let things flow?

Yarn Suggestions:

Recommended yarn is a Sport (2) weight yarn OR whatever size you’re able to achieve gauge with.  I suggest using a natural fiber good for the warmer weather months like linen or cotton.  This will also help with blocking at the end of the project.

Yarns I’ve used for this project:

  • Rowan Yarn Cotton Glace
  • Spud and Chloe Yarn Fine (listed as a fingering weight, but I was able to make gauge)

Materials

  • Yarn: Approximately 236-941 yards of Sport (2) yarn
  • Knitting Needles: Size 3.75mm (US 5) circular needles and (Optional) Double Pointed Needles OR whatever size is needed to achieve gauge
  • Yarn or Tapestry Needle

Gauge

10 sts and 16 rows  = 2 inches (5 centimeters) in Stockinette Stich

***It is important to check your gauge!***

Abbreviations

  • K: Knit
  • P: Purl
  • SSK: Slip each of the next 2 sts as if to knit and K2tog through the back loop while still on the right needle (decrease)
  • K2tog: Knit the next 2 sts together (decrease)
  • YO: Yarn Over
  • PM: Place Marker
  • W&T: Wrap and turn
  • KFB: Knit the next stitch through both the front and back loops (increase)

Using your yarn needle and pieces of scrap yarn for stitch holders, you’ll now place all of your sts onto various holders:

Slip the next 16 sts off of your needles and onto your stitch holder (this should bring you to first stitch marker), secure that stitch holder and set aside.  Slip the next 32 sts off of your needles and onto a second stitch holder (this should bring you to second stitch marker), secure that stitch holder and set aside.  Slip the next 32 sts off of your needles and onto a third stitch holder (this should bring you to third stitch marker), secure that stitch holder and set aside.  Leave the next 32 sts on your knitting needles live and ready to be knit.  Bind off those 32 sts.  Slip the next 16 sts off of your needles and onto a fourth stitch holder, secure that stitch holder and set aside.

Your project should measure 6.5” (16.5cm) x 6.5” (16.5cm) at this point.

See Video 13 for help with next section.

Seam one of the small lace block to the edge that you just did the bind off on.  Block as desired.  We’ll be returning to this edge to add trim later.

See Diagram 1.

Upper Back Pattern

See Video 14 for help with next section.

Return to the upper edge of the Large Lace Block piece you just created (upper edge is the opposite side of the edge you just extended).  Place the 32 sts along this edge onto knitting needles ready to be worked.  Attach a new strand of Color 2 yarn to the top right corner stitch with the right side of the project facing you.

Row 21: P1, K1, P1, K1, Purl across

Repeat Rows 20&21 until you’ve increased to 76 total sts.  Loosely bind off.

Get one of your small lace blocks and set aside.  Seam 2 of the small lace blocks together.  Seam these two pieces to the bottom edge you just created with the smaller, one block piece on the side closest to the back panel and the longer, 2 block piece on the side closest to the front opening.  If necessary, pick up sts and add additional length on either side.

See Diagram 2.

Second Front Side Pattern

Return to the upper edge of the Large Lace Block piece you previously created where you placed your 9 sts onto stitch holder.  Place those sts onto your needles ready to work.  Connect new strand of Color 2 yarn with purled side facing you.

Row 21: Purl to last 4 sts, K1, P1, K1, P1

Repeat Rows 20&21 until you’ve increased to 76 total sts.  Loosely bind off.

Get one of your small lace blocks and set aside.  Seam 2 of the small lace blocks together.  Seam these two pieces to the bottom edge you just created with the smaller, one block piece on the side closest to the back panel and the longer, 2 block piece on the side closest to the front opening.  If necessary, pick up sts and add additional length on either side.

Lining up the front and back Small Lace Blocks, seam the back panel to the front sides of vest.  Leave desired space for arm hole.  I chose to leave 8” (20.25cm) open for the arm hole on my sample.

Evenly pick up sts along any edges that don’t have seed stitch border (pick up live sts off of holders if you have them) and add seed stitch (*K1, P1*) edging for 4 rows around project.

Using your yarn needle and pieces of scrap yarn for stitch holders, you’ll now place all of your sts onto various holders:

Slip the next 22 sts off of your needles and onto your stitch holder (this should bring you to first stitch marker), secure that stitch holder and set aside.  Slip the next 45 sts off of your needles and onto a second stitch holder (this should bring you to second stitch marker), secure that stitch holder and set aside.  Slip the next 45 sts off of your needles and onto a third stitch holder (this should bring you to third stitch marker), secure that stitch holder and set aside.  Leave the next 45 sts on your knitting needles live and ready to be knit.  Bind off the next 45 sts.  Slip the next 23 sts off of your needles and onto a fourth stitch holder, secure that stitch holder and set aside.

Your project should measure 9” (22.75cm) x 9” (22.75cm) at this point.

See Video 13 for help with next section.

Pick up sts along the edge of one small lace block and extend it as needed to make the lace block the center of the piece when seamed to the bind off edge you just created.  Then bind off and repeat on the opposite side.  Seam this piece to the edge that you just did the bind off on.  Block as desired.  We’ll be returning to this edge to add trim later.

Using your yarn needle and pieces of scrap yarn for stitch holders, you’ll now place all of your sts onto various holders:

Slip the next 24 sts off of your needles and onto your stitch holder (this should bring you to first stitch marker), secure that stitch holder and set aside.  Slip the next 48 sts off of your needles and onto a second stitch holder (this should bring you to second stitch marker), secure that stitch holder and set aside.  Slip the next 48 sts off of your needles and onto a third stitch holder (this should bring you to third stitch marker), secure that stitch holder and set aside.  Leave the next 48 sts on your knitting needles live and ready to be knit.  Bind off those 48 sts (this should bring you to fourth stitch marker).  Slip the next 24 sts off of your needles and onto a fourth stitch holder, secure that stitch holder and set aside.

You now have 48 sts on your needles ready to be worked.

Your project should measure 9.5” (24cm) x 9.5” (24cm) at this point.

See Diagram 1.

Seam 3 of the small lace blocks together.  Seam 4 of the small lace blocks together.  Seam these two pieces to the bottom edge you just created with the smaller, 3 block piece on the side closest to the back panel and the longer, 4 block piece on the side closest to the front opening.

Lining up the front and back Small Lace Blocks, seam the back panel to the front sides of vest.  Leave desired space for arm hole.  I chose to leave 13” (33cm) open for the arm hole on my sample.

Evenly pick up sts along any edges that don’t have seed stitch border (pick up live sts off of holders if you have them) and add seed stitch (*K1, P1*) edging for 4 rows around project.
