North Star {Ice Queen Dress Blanket}

This is the fourteenth post in my North Star November series….a soul centered discussion about depression.  Each day this month, I’ll be sharing a piece of my soul’s journey, along with a free pattern to thank you for taking part in such an important conversation!  Catch up by reading Day 13Skip forward to Day 15.

Find Your North Star

This is when my relationship coach and I created an intention for our work together.

She called it a “North Star” statement.  A firm intention statement about who I REALLY am.  The goal was to keep this intention in mind always.

Because of my standing belief that I could never be good enough, I long ago abandoned my true identity to try and live up to false expectations.

It was quite the eye opener to become aware of the fact that I had spent so much time trying to be good enough for all the people around me, that I had neglected to ever be myself.

My North Star intention statement?

I will be a model of self care and self love for my children.

I made the mistake of stifling my inner most self long ago.  I spent my entire life living that way.

I don’t want the same for my children.

Kids Follow Their Model…What are you modeling?

How are our kiddos supposed to learn the importance of caring for themselves without a model??

I set out to always be true to my authentic self and to model this through doing the things that fed my soul.

Finally someone was paying attention to ME….and because it was the person who knows me best (myself!), my heart and soul felt like it was getting what it needed.

Comment and tell me…

What would your North Star intention statement be?

27 Comments On “North Star {Ice Queen Dress Blanket}”

  1. Thank you for sharing North Star. I have loads of feelings and thought whirling around in my head, but not ready to put the thoughts down yet. Just wanted you to know that I am reading, listening and thinking hard on all you have written. And thanks for the great pattern share.

    • Love that it’s getting thoughts swirling…that’s really all it’s meant to do! Thanks for commenting to tell me <3

  2. My North Star intention is kindness, including loving-kindness.
i’ve lived without kindness for most of my life with only a few exceptions … i’ve been reading a lot of books about self-compassion, kindness, and loving-kindness to self and to others, and the books have really made a deep impression on me. kindness to self and to others actually requires less effort than hatefulness, and it brings me peace and contentment.
dear melody, thankyou again for this series … you are very, very special.
    regards always,
    daisy 🙂

    • Ah, thank you Daisy! I super appreciate you continuing to follow along. I’ve also been immersing myself in books and audio on self compassion and loving kindness. It makes a tremendous difference.

  3. Your statement about modeling self care to your children is so very important. As parents, we often ‘run our well dry’ by trying to support and help our kids and/or spouses. But it’s very important to keep in mind that if our well is truly dry, we cannot help ANYONE! It took me a long time to put me first when it came to self care, but now I try very hard to make sure I’m caring for myself so I can care for my family.

    • Yes, yes, yes! I seem to be able to care for my family on a much higher level when I feel cared for (by myself) first.

  4. I always stay to being me, because I dislike pretending to be someone else!

  5. I really don’t have a North statement to myself but I’ve tried lately to
make up for lost time so to speak of not putting myself first by reorganizing
my daily to do list where as I now only clean 1 room a day instead of trying
to do the whole house in 2 days besides doing other necessary daily chores and
if I don’t feel like cooking then I make sure when I do cook to do enough for
leftovers for the next day and if the others don’t want that then I just let
them fend for themselves also I make sure to carve out some time during the day
or night to work on my crochet which I enjoy doing as this helps me deal with my stress and anxiety by helping me to relax more and enjoy what I’m doing at the
    moment.

    • Sounds like you’re cutting yourself some much needed breaks and making the shift towards more self care. Love it!

  6. Like others – no real North Star statement. Upon reflection I can see where I’ve stopped doing/being me and am going with the flow. Not caring that others around me (work people) see the real me anymore. Feel like they don’t care. Am I truly happy – no but it is easier to coast right now than swim against the tide.

    • I know that feeling – it’s not always the time to make big change. It took me a while to “gear up” to start asking these big questions and making these changes. I’m in support of whatever helps you get through <3

  7. “What would your North Star intention statement be?”
    Serving others for His glory.

  8. I have no idea, going through so much right now, my own health isn’t good, care taking others, and we are having a freezing spell this week and our heat is out. We live in an old house that is falling apart and leaks in several rooms. I thought that was hard enough with all the rain we’ve had lately and now I know the rain wasn’t as bad as being cold. Sometimes it seems as though I’m one step from going under but I can’t because so many others need me but also scared that I can’t keep going on forever like this.

    • I know this feeling. When I get dragged down into that space, I like to remind myself that it’s totally ok to take it one step at a time. “What’s the next right thing right now?” That can help me to get back into the present.

  9. My Statement would be to be myself with no regrets, regardless of what people have to say and to be Queer AF without caring about who might care.

  10. Two thumbs up!

  11. very interesting blog Can so relate. Here is the link to the seminar I participated in. It sure helped me .My husband is in the Nov seminar. It will be interesting to see what he finds out. I encourage anyone to take it.
    http://www.choicesseminars.com/

    • Thank you for this link! I’ll definitely be checking it out…seminars, books, workshops, guides….all of those things are right up my alley on this topic lately!

  12. I think you have gotten into my head and are putting down my feelings daily. I need to stop being everything to everyone and start thinking of myself. My life has been extremely stressful of late and when I do get a few minutes of “down” time, all I want to do is empty my mind of everything. I have even started telling my husband (when he starts talking about something that I can not do anything about) that if it is not something that I need to know about or “fix”, then I don’t want to talk about it. I hope I am not just burying my head in the sand, but I don’t have time or the energy to talk about things that I can not “deal” with. I really like getting up early just to have some “me” time in the mornings. I have been finding it harder and harder to do so, but am thoroughly enjoying this time this morning.

    • Love that you’re recognizing that protecting your mental space and taking care of yourself is so important! I know it has made a HUGE change in my life, even though making the transition to a new way of living is extremely slow and often uncomfortable. I’m SO proud of you, Pam!

  13. Loving this blog/club site. I have lupus and spent all summer with a bum knee (inflamed tendons/ligaments) limiting all my activities, it has been a very stressful summer/fall. Now it’s improved with corrected meds and therapy but now we are into the holiday season and another stress filled time, I am still trying to catch up around house with everything that I had to let slide since April (learning to let go of some things or to get others to do them). I now have your site to help. You don’t always recognize when it happens until it’s a bit too late, but reading your blog I have come to realize that I am a bit depressed and have started taking better care of ME. Thank you and I have missed all this since I couldn’t access all my stash since spring and now am getting back in the groove, I need more time for all the projects I have lined up since rejoining the your web sites, lol

    • SO glad you were able to recognize that you’ve been a bit down so you can start taking better care of yourself. This is so touching to me – thank you for sharing. I’m thrilled you’re back at your stash, and enjoying the blog and group!

  14. I feel like my north star would be sort of similar to yours. I’m a people pleaser and a perfectionist, so that makes it hard to show the real me. Ever since my postpartum depression therapy, I have been more able to show my true self and not masked by who I want others to see. I show people my flaws because I now realize that no one is perfect. I also do that to model to my daughter that it’s ok to have flaws and that big emotions are ok to have.

Now I will say that in public, my anxiety is too bad to just be the real me, but I’m a work in progress.

    • Aren’t we all big works in progress? I also love that we’re able to show our children that human emotions are ok! Thanks for posting…love it!
