Bottom Up Crochet Hats – They’re a Cinch!

Bottom Up Crochet Hat Video Tutorial

How to Close A Bottom Up Crochet Hat – Video Tutorial!

Since I started out as a knitter, it’s always been really natural for me to work any hat, knit or crochet, from the bottom up.  In fact, when I first started adding crochet designs to my shop, I had no idea that the standard was to work most crochet hats from the top down!

Since then, I’ve become really familiar with standard crochet techniques….but I still find myself working some designs from the bottom up.  Sometimes they simply flow better that way!  What’s that saying about learning the rules!?

I always like to make sure I provide excellent support for my patterns though…..so since I’ve had a few e-mails about how to close a bottom up crochet hat without a pucker or point top, I thought it was time to share this quick tip!

This video was made to accompany one of my patterns, The Bias Beanie, so you’ll see reference to that in there….just ignore that bit though.  The part about closing up the hat is the same.

Is this technique new to you?  Do you have any other tips/tricks for creating a beautiful bottom-up crochet hat?  Share them with me in the comments!

  1. How do you finish the closing off? You can’t just cut the yarn and leave it there.

  2. How interesting…I’ve honestly never run into a bottom up crochet hat before. I’ll have to give this a try!

    • They’re definitely not as common as crochet hats made from the top down, but there are certain instances when they work a little better (at least in my opinion).

  3. I love to make bottom up hats, they are easier for me. Something about the round….lol Thanks for the share and the free patterns. 🙂 Great post!

  4. Nice tip. I have used this a few times and it does work. I usually leave between 6-10 stitches for the closing. With too many you you can still get a little pucker and too few and you can get the ‘nipple’ look. At least that has been my experience.

  5. I’m so excited to look thru, share and just enjoy crochet with you fine folks.

  6. Thank you. I liked this tip. I would have liked to see the finish off though.

  7. I pull the tail to the wrong side and carefully weave it in just like you would do if you were changing colors and had tails hanging down.

  8. Do you have any patterns for a bottoms up crochet hat? I have always found just the top to bottom crochet hats…would be fun to do something different!

    • Many of mine are bottom up! Did you see my new free pattern – the Sweet-ish Subtlety Hat? That one is worked from the bottom up 🙂

  9. Thank you I will check it out 🙂
