Feather and Fan Shawl

Free-Knit-Scarflette-Pattern

Free Knit Feather and Fan Scarflette Pattern

This knit feather and fan shawl is a beautiful lightweight addition to your summer wardrobe.  Worked on straight needles, this feather and fan design is an excellent opportunity to practice more difficult skills in a repetitive way.

The resulting shawl has such a beautiful texture.  Add a gorgeous brooch, and this free feather and fan knit shawl pattern is the picture of elegance.  Plus, made of just a single skein of yarn, this is a good stash buster project too.

“Every single knitter I know has a small hoard of single skeins just waiting for something awesome to happen. Recently I have launched a campaign to end the single skeins in my stash and make amazing things. I love the simple yet elegant look of the fan and feather pattern (you will get so many compliments and those not-in-the-know will think you are a magician). With a few adjustments, it makes an amazing scarflette. Quick and easy.

Knit Feather and Fan Pattern

This piece was knit with a leftover skein from a baby blanket project and contained 440 yards. It knit to be 48 inches long and 9 inches wide. The beauty of the pattern is that it is conducive to almost all yarn.”

  10. Looking forward to knitting this. Thank you!

  11. Something so simple and yet so pretty! thank you Melody!

  12. When it says slip first stitch in each row as if to knit, is that every row or just 11-14. Beginner here. Thanks.

  13. And that counts as 1 of the knit 4 in rows 11 and 14? Sorry, just trying to figure it out.

    • No, no. It doesn’t count as a row, just the very first stitch of each row. You just slip one stitch and then complete the rest of the row.

  14. No, I mean, do I slip then knit 4 or slip and 3 more.

  15. If I want to increase the width what is the number of stitches is the pattern plus ? ?

  16. Why circular needles & not regular straight needles for this pattern?

    • If you can fit it on regular straight needles then those work too. The pattern just calls for the circular needles because it’s a wide piece and might be hard to cram onto straights 🙂

  17. Thanks for your prompt reply!

  18. I am a new knitter and I don’t understand the last part of row 11. Repeat from ( to ) 2 more times for a total of 3 sets, it is the ( to ) I don’t understand. Thank you for your help.

  19. Thank you Melody for this beautiful pattern. I have some of the Caron Cakes that everyone is so crazy about right now and have been searching for the perfect pattern. This will do nicely. And it’s easy to read and in such a pretty font.

  20. Amanda, did you get an answer to this? It is confusing to me also.

  21. Slip and then 3 more.

  22. Row11, I have three too many stitches ( have 62 stitches)

    • I just checked the pattern, and it’s correct as written. You should be working with 18 sts between the ( ) a total of 3 times, for a total of 54 sts. The 4 outermost sts on either side make it a total count of 62.

  23. Love this pattern. To follow up on this question…beginner here. Where it says “K four.” When you slip the first stitch, would that then be “slip 1, k three?”

  24. Thank you for such a lovely pattern. I have spent hours on many websites for just the right pattern and this is it. Easy and I like the feather and fan design.
Thank you again for sharing. I will be checking your website again.

  25. Need help!! Row 11- I have worked it twice and get far more stitches. I feel it is in the yo that seems to be adding more. I know in reading and counting it totals 18.
This what I do K2tog 3 times, yo,K1 6times, K2tog 3 times til last last 4K and I have only 62 st when I start this. I hope you can solve my problem.
    Thanks
P.S. I have done the first set okay.

    • There is a decrease for every YO increase. The section between ( ) starts with 18 sts and ends with 18 sts each time. If you do that 3 times, you end up with 54 sts plus the 4 on each side making the total of 62. My guess is you’re only doing 3 decreases between each yarn over section rather than the 6 decreases….be sure you pay attention to where the repeat starts and ends 🙂

  26. Sorry but could you explain what is the decraese stitch. Is it the same as PSSO.
That is the comfusing part I am wrapping the yo around my needle then contining
which is certainly why I have so many stitches. Is the yo then K1 and decrease by passing the yo stitch over the K1??? i know I am confusing myself.

  27. Thanks again for your time. I think I have got it. Checked out some video on line
and finally found out what I was not doing as you said the repeats. I have not started it again but hoping this solves my problem.

  28. Being a beginner and loving feather and fan pattern, I find it VERY confusing. I would like row 11 to be written out this way…..

Slip first st as if to knit, knit 3, knit 2 tog, knit 2 tog, knit 2 tog.
Yarn over knit one, yarn over knit one (a total of 5 times)
Knit 2 tog, knit 2 tog, knit 2 tog

Repeat the above two more times for a total of 3 sets, knit 4
    (62 total stitches)

Do I have this pattern correct? I think not, because I end up with
Wrong number of stitches… Please help me, thank you.

    • Between each ( ) you should have a total of 18 sts. 3 total decreases (worked over 6 sts), 6 total increases (worked over 6 sts), and 3 more decreases (worked over 6 sts). Hope this helps!

  29. I am the ‘confused’ one back in September when I first left ???.
I have mastered the pattern and just wanted you to know. I am so
enjoying knitting this pattern now that “I’ve got it.”
Thank you and do wish your holidays will be merry and bright.

  30. Well, finished edge does not have the scalloped finish. Any suggestions

  31. I do not use FaceBook, or any other social media. Can I please get this pattern? Can one of you send it to me? [email protected]

  32. I don’t see the pattern, and I really want it. 🙁 When I click on any thing, it reroutes here, and it says I have to like it on FaceBook…

  33. Aha–I pretended to “Like” and the pattern showed up! Thanks!

  34. Beautiful pattern…have the perfect one skein to use – thank you for this lovely design!

  35. I love this design and can’t wait to make this. I’m curious, has anyone made this with gradient colors? If so, how did it turn out or is solid color the best way to go?

  36. Soooo beautiful. I’ve read comments here, but am still unsure about the slip because there isn’t a reference * in the pattern that matches the * of the slip. So, do I begin slipping on Row 1 or Row 11?

Thank you for the pattern and assistance.

  37. ive used multicolored yarn with this pattern in a smaller version for baby blankets and it turns out great

  38. What ply wool would you recommend for size 7 needles

If not I have 3ply baby wool and hoping to make a nice shawl for my daughters truso… what size needles would you suggest

  39. Hi Everyone,
I have worked this stitch many times and absolutely love it. Use less stitches and make a very nice wash cloth, dishes or face; the last project I started is for a single bed coverlette. I was able to find a LOT of 3 ply yarn at a thrift shop and decided to use that yarn. This lovely coverlet will look so pretty with a PINK or WHITE sheet under it. It is very lacy and feminine looking just what I was looking for BUT will take a WHILE to finish. Loving every minute of my KNIT time. Thank you for this pattern and I will be sure to use it soon. It is getting COLD in Michigan and will need it when out getting the mail or a quick trip to the grocery store. Thank you so much for posting this gorgeous pattern and answering all the questions. VERY HELPFUL!!! Nancy
