Materials:

  • Yarn: Approximately 35 yards of worsted (4) yarn (approx. 30 yards of green, and approx. 3 yards of brown and approx. 2 yards of yellow)
  • Random bits of scrap yarn for Christmas lights  (I used Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice)
  • Knitting Needles: Size 5.5 mm (US9) Straight Needles
  • Yarn or Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:

  • K: Knit
  • K2tog: Knit the next 2 sts together
  • CO: Cast on (using Cable Cast On Method)
  • **: Repeat the section in between the two stars as specified

  (Use as Trivet or Make 2 and seam together for Pot Holder)   Cast on 25 sts using Green Yarn onto Straight Needles Row 1: Knit Row 2: K2tog, K21, K2tog (23 total sts) Row 3: Knit Row 4: K2tog, K19, K2tog (21 total sts) Row 5: Knit Row 6: K2tog, K17, K2tog (19 total sts) Row 7: Knit Row 8: K2tog, K15, K2tog (17 total sts) Row 9: Knit Row 10: K2tog, K13, K2tog (15 total sts) Row 11: Knit (See Video 1 for help with Row 7) Row 12: CO3 sts onto left hand needle using cable cast on method (these are the next sts you’ll work across), K18, Turn Work, CO3 sts onto left needle using cable cast on method, Turn Work, place last 3 sts back onto left needle, K3 (21 total sts) Row 13: Knit Row 14: K2tog, K17, K2tog (19 total sts) Row 15: Knit Row 16: K2tog, K15, K2tog (17 total sts) Row 17: Knit Row 18: K2tog, K13, K2tog (15 total sts) Row 19: Knit Row 20: K2tog, K11, K2tog (13 total sts) Row 21: Knit Row 22: K2tog, K9, K2tog (11 total sts) Row 23: Knit Row 24: CO3 sts onto left hand needle using cable cast on method (these are the next sts you’ll work across), K14, Turn Work, CO3 sts onto left needle using cable cast on method, Turn Work, place last 3 sts back onto left needle, K3 (17 total sts) Row 25: Knit Row 26: K2tog, K13, K2tog (15 total sts) Row 27: Knit Row 28: K2tog, K11, K2tog (13 total sts) Row 29: Knit Row 30: K2tog, K9, K2tog (11 total sts) Row 31: Knit Row 32: K2tog, K7, K2tog (9 total sts) Row 33: Knit Row 34: K2tog, K5, K2tog (7 total sts) Row 35: Knit Row 36: CO3 sts onto left hand needle using cable cast on method (these are the next sts you’ll work across), K10, Turn Work, CO3 sts onto left needle using cable cast on method, Turn Work, place last 3 sts back onto left needle, K3 (13 total sts) Row 37: Knit Row 38: K2tog, K9, K2tog (11 total sts) Row 39: Knit Row 40: K2tog, K7, K2tog (9 total sts) Row 41: Knit Row 42: K2tog, K5, K2tog (7 total sts) Row 43: Knit Row 44: K2tog, K3, K2tog (5 total sts) Row 45: Knit Row 46: K2tog, K1, K2tog (3 total sts) Row 47: Knit Row 48: K2tog, K1 (2 total sts) Row 49: Knit Row 50: K2tog Secure and weave in all ends.   Return to your starting edge.  Count 10 sts in from the edge.  Pick up and knit the next 5 sts using brown yarn. Rows 1-3: Knit Bind off as if to knit. Secure and weave in all ends.   Cast on 6 sts using yellow yarn. Row 1: *CO3 sts onto left hand needle using cable cast on method (these are the next sts you’ll work across), BO4* Repeat across (5 points created) Secure end and use yarn tail to seam your piece into a star shape and attach to top of tree. Weave in all ends. Use pieces of scrap yarn to tie little knots on back side and decorate your tree with Christmas lights.
