Tour Our Aquaponics Greenhouse

When we first moved into our home, Nick immediately started building a 600 square foot aquaponics greenhouse.  He’s always been a big fan of fish and fresh food.  So why not put the two together?

Fast forward a couple of years, and our greenhouse is fully functioning and providing an amazing amount of food for our family.  We’re still learning every season, and we have a long way to go.  We do grow some incredible lettuce, mixed greens, tomatoes, etc. already in this aquaponics system though.

Over the years, I’ve had so many requests to share more about Nick’s awesome DIY aquaponics greenhouse.  So since Charlie’s first day of school was yesterday and we had a moment where the other two were soundly sleeping, we slipped away to the greenhouse for a couple of minutes.  This is just a really quick video tour, but it shares just a little bit more about us and the other things we’re passionate about.  Hope you enjoy it!

  1. Your greenhouse is awesome! I’ve been wanting to try aquaponic gardening for a long time but I’ve been afraid to. I’d love to have a setup like yours. Was it very expensive? How did you figure out how to do it?
Melody, I love your blog and your baby patterns. keep it up!

    • Nick did a lot of reading online and it’s been a lot of trial and error too. There are blueprints for systems available various places online. It wasn’t cheap to set up…but once you get it set up it pretty much takes care of itself and produces a lot.

  2. That’s a nice, neat setup.
I love the aquaculture addition to your hydrponics.
    Awesome job!

  3. This is wonderful! It would be so fun to have something like that, great ideas.

  4. It was very nice of you to share your greenhouse video. Nicely done

  5. Your video was awesome. Love your ideas both in baby patterns and I love fish and tomatoes.

  6. Whow!! Fantastic. I love all the different tomatoes you have. Thanks for sharing your video.

  7. This is awe-inspiring!!!!! Wow!!! Do you raise the fish for foods well, or just to feed the the greenhouse bounty?

    • We do eat the fish as well, but we recently had a power outage which killed a bunch of our fish….so it will be a while before we have enough to eat again. We tried to hatch some eggs this year, but were unsuccessful….we’ll be trying again next year!

  8. *food as well

  9. This is awesome.Always thought it would be fun to have a greenhouse like this congratulation it is fabulous.

  10. Thank you for sharing that. Very nice!

  11. Thank you for sharing. We are working towards a functional homestead, and the hubby really enjoyed the tour. He’s now thinking about how to do an aquaponics system here.

  12. Beautiful green house! Nothing tastes better than fresh fruits and vegetables!

  13. very nice garden this year I did an orangic one in the yard plenty ful harvest so far but love your idea thanks for sharing

  14. Awesome!

  15. My daughter’s high school does aquaponics. She learned a lot in 2 years of horticulture class. One day I would like to have one of my own since we eat all organic and it’s so expensive.

  16. Wow! It was really neat to visit your greenhouse. I was surprised to see you have yellow perch. They are a Great Lakes fish, and I hadn’t seen them raised in tanks. I do know they are tasty! Thanks to you and Nick for the tour.

  17. It is not Aquaponic, it is Hydroponic

    • Hydroponics are closed systems that you have to add nutrients to. Aquaponics are closed systems supported by fish. This system has fish….so it’s aquaponics 🙂

  18. Very Cool. I don’t do gardening, but if I did, I would like to do something like yours. Thanks for sharing.

  19. I’ve not seen this before. Awesome.

  20. Thank you for sharing. This was very informative and educational for me. A totally new experience that I’ll be investigating.
Enjoy your blog and patterns. Thank you for sharing all your efforts. God bless.

  21. Thank you for the tour!! The greenhouse is awesome…I have always been curious about aquaponics and the video answered some of my questions…now if I could just get my hubby to build a set up for me I would be in 7th Heaven LOL

  22. That was awesome would love to be able to do that but alas live in a condo. What I wonder though is what do you do with all those vegetables especially the tomatoes. It looks way too much for your family. You must do a lot of canning. Would love some tips and tricks if you do. Thanks for sharing.

    • We do a ton of canning, and we sell a to a few local brunches, shops, etc. But mostly just a ton of canning and gifting to friends and family 🙂

  23. Thanks for the tour. That is very interesting. I love the concept especially the “fish” part.

  24. Loved your tour, thank you so much for sharing. Nothing taste better than home grown. 🙂

  25. WOWZER!!! I can’t wait to show hubbo the video! Had never heard of anything like Aquaponics B4, it looks very interesting! What part of the USA do you live??
Do you have lots of sun year-round?? Enuf to ‘power’ the solar panels year-round??Do you start the vegs from seed in soil first?? If not, do you buy veg starts like reg soil gardeners can do & then ‘plant’ them in the holes in the water tanks?? Could you show some pics of the outside of the 600 SF greenhouse?? What is the roof/sides made from?? I forget now if in the video you can see what the ‘floor’ consists of, is it just dirt/the ground, concrete, etc.?? Do you have city water or well water in the water tanks for the vegs?? If city water, do you have to filter or treat it?? Do you mind all of my ??, I know I got lots of ’em! :)) TIA for any/all answers :)))

  26. Thank you Melody and Nick for the awesome tour of your Aquaponics Greenhouse! We don’t have a greenhouse here in Central Wisconsin as it would be nearly impossible, or at least not cost effective, to keep warm from fall through late spring.

We do have a regular outdoor garden, 100% chemical free, that we take great pride in and we preserve as much of it as we can for future use. The flavor of fresh vegetables put up right from your own garden have nearly the same flavor as the day you picked them. Nothing is as good as home grown…no matter how you grow it!

  27. I was wondering all the same questions ! ?
